Why You Shouldn't Read "Man's Search for Meaning" by Viktor E. Frankl

Stephen Bryant August 1, 2023

It might seem counterintuitive to discourage you from reading what many consider to be one of the most influential books of the 20th century. But, before you furrow your brows in confusion, let me clarify that my aim is to challenge your perceptions and invite you to approach Viktor E. Frankl's magnum opus, "Man's Search for Meaning," with a fresh perspective.

  1. Prepare for a profound introspection: If you're not ready to face your deepest existential questions or grapple with life's purpose, you might want to postpone reading this book. Frankl's insightful observations from his experiences in Nazi death camps explore the very essence of existence and our pursuit of meaning. It compels introspection, which can be uncomfortable if you're not prepared for it.

  2. It will challenge your worldview: Frankl's theory, known as logotherapy, posits that our primary motivation is to find meaning in life, not power or pleasure. If you're not ready to reconsider some of the fundamental principles that you've held about life, happiness, and success, this book might turn your world upside down.

  3. It's heavy, in the best way: "Man's Search for Meaning" is not a light beach read. The book takes you on a heart-wrenching journey through the atrocities of the Holocaust and humanity's struggle for existence. If you're not prepared for an emotional journey that will bring you face-to-face with the darkest and most inspiring aspects of human nature, you may want to hold off.

But, if you're ready to embark on this profound journey, "Man's Search for Meaning" is waiting for you. It will challenge you, make you question, and most importantly, inspire you. And in that process, it will enrich your life in ways you can't imagine.

So, maybe the question shouldn't be "why you shouldn't read" this book, but rather "are you ready to read it?" If the answer is yes, get your copy of "Man's Search for Meaning" HERE.
